Varnishes
Wood
floors can add warmth, color and texture to your home. A good finish brings
out the beauty of the wood, protects it and makes the floor easier to keep
clean. The best finish to use on a particular floor depends on the kind and
condition of the wood or previous finish, the amount of traffic in the room
and your personal choice.
There
are several different types of protective finishes. The most common are
penetrating sealers or surface finishes, including polyurethane, varnish,
and shellac. Penetrating sealers (mentioned under staining) penetrate the
pores of the wood, so the finish wears as the wood wears. They come tinted or clear. These
penetrating sealers are often used as an undercoat with surface finishes.
Surface finishes provide a tough, clear coating over stained or sealed wood.
Polyurethane has pretty much replaced varnish, shellac, and lacquer.
Polyurethane finish come in solvent based and water
based.
